Multistate Outbreaks of Human Salmonella Infections Linked to Live Poultry in Backyard Flocks, 2017

7/13/17 10 outbreaks across the United States from backyard flocks have caused CDC to investigate Salmonella infections. Currently there are nearly 800 cases across 48 states that have resulted in almost 200 hospitalizations. Contact with live poultry, such as chicks and ducklings, can spread Salmonella bacteria. Poultry may appear healthy and clean, with no sign of illness. Tips on protection is given by the CDC.

Revised Form I-9 Now Available

7/17/17 USCIS released a revised version of the Form I-9 on July 17. This Employment Eligibility Verification form has 2 revisions to the instructions and three revisions related to the section: List of Acceptable Documents. Changes are included in the revised employer handbook and the revised form can be used immediately. Implementation date is September 18. Given that the majority of these deaths are preventable, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is aiming to strengthen the FDA’s risk based approach to the oversight of food safety. The new law gives is giving higher focus on prevention over response.

New CDC report: More than 100 million Americans have diabetes or prediabetes

7/18/17 Diabetes alert! According to a CDC report, diabetes is on the rise here in the United States. This in-depth report dissects raw data and even includes county-level metrics to help identify areas of the country where this is of particular concern. Safety professionals would benefit from the research to help educate their workforce on prevention of diabetes and reinforce the need to be diligent with blood-sugar regulation in employees who are managing the disease.
